My classroom will have five large desks for students to sit at. Each desk will seat three to four students, this will allow the students be able to work in small groups based on where they are sitting.
There are also two tables in the back of the room and two large rugs where students can move to work with a partner or in small groups. One of the extra tables in the back of the room is a round table, that fits up to six students. Next to this table is a bulletin board, where the word wall is located.
The second table in the back of the room is in the shape of a U. This table will fit up to five students plus myself. This table is designed to allow the teacher to sit work with a small group of students. Due to the shape of the desk, I will be the same distance away from each student and able to turn in the chair to look at each students paper with ease. A blackboard is located behind the U-shaped table, this will allow me to teach or work with a small group of students in our own little area.
Bookshelves line the back right side of the classroom and along the right side of the classroom. The bookshelves are organized by genre and color by reading level. Each book is color coded with a piece of tape on the spine of the book, this will allow student to easily recognize which books are appropriate for them.
The bookshelf on the far left, in the back of the room, holds the student computers. This is where the student computers stay until I instruct the students to get them.
A large circle carpet is located in the back left corner. Students can use this carpet as a comfy place to read independently, or as a place in the room to meet with a partner or small group, A large square carpet is located in the front of the classroom, in front of the Smart board. This carpet is used for students to come to the front of the classroom for whole group instruction. This carpet can also be used to meet with partner or small group.
My desk is located in the front of the classroom on the right side and the door to the classroom is on the opposite side of the room. There is a large set of windows on the right side wall of the classroom to allow for plenty of natural light.
The setup of my classroom allows for students to work with partners and in small groups. This classroom set up works well for many of the activities I plan to use in my classroom including reader's theater, literature circles and writing conferences.
